Financial services a broad range of money-management businesses, including credit unions, banks, credit-card companies, insurance companies, accounting firms, consumer-finance firms, stock brokerage firms, investment funds, individual money managers, and some government-sponsored enterprises, provide financial services to the public at large.

When the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act was passed in the late 1990s, it made it possible for various kinds of businesses operating in the United States financial services sector at the time to combine, the word "financial services" became more well known.
