Gail Whiteman (born 1965) is a Canadian-British social scientist specialising in global risk. She founded the science outreach non-profit Arctic Basecamp[1] and is Professor of Sustainability at the University of Exeter’s Business School. [2]

Academic career[edit]

Whiteman is an expert on global risk arising from the systemic changes occurring in the natural environment. Her PhD is from Queen’s University where she studied management. Her field work was conducted in the subarctic region of Canada with the James Bay Cree. She has over 60 peer-reviewed scientific papers. She has published widely including in journals such as Nature, with coauthors including Christiana Figueres and Johan Rockstrom.

Her research uses organisation theory on information flows and sensemaking processes to analyse how companies, policymakers, civil society, and local communities make sense of and respond to ecological risk.

Arctic Basecamp[edit]

In 2017, Whiteman founded Arctic Basecamp, a non-profit science outreach organisation. She is its Executive Director. In 2021, she was named a PR Week Top Communicator of the Year for her work with Arctic Basecamp.[3]
