Ghazal Alagh (born September 2, 1988) is an Indian businesswoman, investor, and artist best known as the co-founder of MamaEarth, a body care brand.[1] She is the co-founder and chief innovation officer at Honasa Consumer Limited, which is a holding company for various beauty and personal care brands such as MamaEarth, Aqualogica, The Derma Co., Ayuga, BBlunt, and Dr. Sheth’s. Alagh was a shark on the first season of the business reality TV show Shark Tank India in 2021.[2][3]

Early life and education[edit]

Alagh was born and raised in Gurgaon, Haryana. She was the eldest of three siblings born to her parents, Kamlesh and Sunita Sahni. Alagh completed her primary and secondary education in Haryana. She graduated with a degree in computer applications from Punjab University in 2010. In 2013, she completed a course in design, specializing in modern art, applied arts, and figurative arts, at the New York Academy of Art.

Career[edit]

Alagh started her career in 2008 as a corporate trainer at NIIT, Chandigarh. She provided training in software applications such as Oracle, SQL, and J2ME to employees at various companies.[4]

In 2012, Alagh established her first venture, Dietexpert.com, an online platform offering customised diet plans tailored to individuals based on age, lifestyle, weight, and fitness objectives.[5]

In 2016, Ghazal Alagh, alongside her husband Varun Alagh, established Honasa Consumer Limited, a holding company for natural beauty and personal care brands such as Mamaearth, Aqualogica, The Derma Co., and Ayuga.[6] The company later acquired BBlunt and Dr. Sheth's. With Alagh serving as co-founder and chief innovation officer, Honasa achieved unicorn status in 2022, becoming the first unicorn of that year. The company went public in November 2023.[7][8]

Motivated by the need for safe and toxin-free products for their baby, Alagh and her husband launched Mamaearth in 2016,[9] aiming to provide affordable yet eco-friendly baby care products.[10] Mamaearth started with six products, including rash creams, lotions, shampoos, massage oils, body washes, and diapers.[11] Within five years, the brand expanded to offer 500 products ranging from baby care to general wellness and beauty.[12] Mamaearth is also Asia's sole MADE SAFE certified brand. In 2017, the company received an investment from Shilpa Shetty. [13][14]

Alagh appeared as a judge on the Indian business reality show Shark Tank India in 2021.[15][16]
