Developed by David Jones and Mike Dailly, the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series is an action-adventure video game franchise[1]. Later titles were produced under the supervision of the Houser brothers, Leslie Benzies, and Aaron Garbut, as well as other industry professionals. It is largely developed by the British development studio Rockstar North (previously DMA Design), and it is released by Rockstar Games, which is the business that created it. The title of the series alludes to the phrase "grand theft auto," which is often used in the United States to refer to the theft of a motor vehicle.

The gameplay takes place in an open environment, where the player may perform quests to advance the storyline as well as participate in a variety of side activities. The majority of the action is focused on driving and shooting, with some role-playing and stealth aspects thrown in for good measure. Several characteristics of the previous beat 'em up games from the 16-bit period may also be found in the series. The Grand Theft Auto series of video games takes place in fictitious settings that are based on real-world cities at different times in time ranging from the early 1960s to the present day. Later titles tend to concentrate on a single setting, which is usually one of the original three locations, albeit remodelled and significantly expanded. The original game's map included three cities: Liberty City (based on New York City), San Andreas (based on San Francisco), and Vice City (based on Miami). It is the focus of the series to follow a variety of characters as they strive to advance through the ranks of the criminal underworld, albeit their motivations for doing so range from title to game. People that have betrayed the protagonist or their organisation, or characters who have the most influence on obstructing the protagonist's advancement, are widely used as villains in narratives. Some of the most well-known actors and musicians in the world have provided voices for characters in the games, including Ray Liotta and Dennis Hopper, as well as Samuel L. Jackson, William Fichtner, James Woods, Debbie Harry, Axl Rose, and Peter Fonda, among others.[2]

The Grand Theft Auto series was launched in 1997 with the release of the first game in the series. Until its conclusion in 2020, the series will include seven stand-alone games and four expansion packs. Grand Theft Auto III, the third major entry in the series, was published in 2001 and is widely regarded as a watershed moment in the series' history since it introduced the series to a three-dimensional (3D) environment and a more immersive experience. Following in the footsteps of Grand Theft Auto III and building on its foundation, subsequent games have gained widespread critical recognition and acclaim. They have had an impact on other open-world action games, leading to the use of the term "Grand Theft Auto clone" to describe comparable games.

Every main 3D entry in the franchise has received positive critical reception, and all of its main 3D entries have consistently been ranked among the greatest and best-selling video games of all time. The series has shipped more than 370 million units, making it the fifth-best-selling video game franchise of all time. A list of British design icons was compiled in 2006 for the Great British Design Quest, which was organised by the BBC and the Design Museum. Grand Theft Auto was included on the list. Grand Theft Auto was named one of the most successful exports from the United Kingdom by The Telegraph in 2013. Because of the series' explicit content and violent themes, it has also been met with criticism.
