Hawthorn Pipe Band is a competitive grade 2 pipe band located in Hawthorn, Australia. The current pipe major is Matt Fraser and the current Leading Drummer is Steven Shedden.

History[edit]

The band was formmed at Hemmingway’s Glenferrie Hotel in the City of Hawthorn on the 26th of November, 1914. After some discussion and much drinking, a number of pipers and drummers decided to form a band which was originally named the Hawthorn Highland Pipe Band.

In 1915, a second meeting saw members of Collingwood Pipe Band join forces with Hawthorn Highland Pipe Band for engagements and practice. The aim of the organisation was to promote and foster Scottish music and culture. Over the last 90 years, there has been little change to that goal.

The name of the band was changed to Hawthorn City Pipe Band in 1927. Recently the band changed its name to Hawthorn Pipe Band.

Past Australian Prime Minister, Sir R. G. Menzies, was the No. 1 Patron of the Band from 1938 until his death in 1978. [1]
