In speculative fiction, horror is a subgenre that is designed to terrify, frighten, or disgust the reader. The horror tale, according to literary historian J. A. Cuddon, is "a work of fiction in prose of varying length that shocks, or perhaps frightens, the reader, or possibly generates a sense of disgust or detest in the reader." The goal of horror writing is to create an eerie and unsettling environment for the reader to experience. Psychological horror and supernatural horror are two sub-genres of horror that are often distinguished. It is not uncommon for the principal dread of a piece of horror fiction to be viewed as a metaphor for the broader concerns that exist in a given society. In this genre, you'll find things like ghosts and demons and vampires and werewolves and ghouls and the Devil. You'll also find things like dystopian and apocalyptic worlds and things like serial killers, psychopaths, cults and dark magic and Satanism. You'll also find things like gore and torture and stuff like that.
