Imo is a free audio, video calling and instant messaging app.[1] It is developed in 2005 by PageBites which requires one's phone number to verify the users' account.[2] It allows sending music, video, PDFs and more with a size limitation of 10 Gigabyte and help people to stay in touch.[3][4] It allows encrypted group video and voice calls with up to 20 participants with various free sticker.[5][6]
Initially, imo.im was launched as a web-based application in 2005 for accessing multiple chat platforms.[7] It helps people to message using multiple platform under one central interface. It was web based in 2009 which dosen't require sign up. This also helped users to save chat history which is very handy for the future references.[8]
Imo has supported Facebook Messenger, Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, etc. It was even supporting Skype chats although this service was pulled out by Skype sometime after it was acquired by Microsoft.[8] In March 2014, they announced to end support for all third-party messaging networks[9]. In 2013, Imo raises $13.3 Million. Later in July 2016, Pagebites released the Windows version of Imo.[10]
In Jan 2018, the app reached 500 million installs.[11]
