Kim Jin-hwan (Korean: 진환; born February 7, 1994), better known as Jinhwan and also known by his stage name Jay, is a South Korean singer, dancer and leader of South Korean boy group iKON under 143 Entertainment.

Early life[edit]

Kim Jinhwan was born on February 7, 1994, in Jeju-do, South Korea. Kim Jinhwan is known for his talents as a singer and performer, as well as his endearing personality and fashion sense. He learns the martial art of taekwondo and piano.[1]

He had actually lived in the Philippines for 7 months before he debuted. Jinhwan enjoyed acquiring knowledge of foreign languages, and he believed that studying English in the Philippines would enhance his prospects of securing an English-related job. Consequently, Jinhwan postponed his aspiration of becoming a singer and traveled to the Philippines to pursue his studies.[2]

Career[edit]

2013–2021: WIN: Who Is Next, Mix & Match and iKON[edit]

Before debuting with iKON, Jinhwan was a trainee for several years under YG Entertainment. During that time, he trained with other future idols such as Bobby and B.I, who would later become his bandmates in iKON.

Participating in the 2013 YG Entertainment competition show WIN: Who Is Next as Team B, they faced defeat against Team A. Later, the individual joined Mix & Match, another boy band competition program, along with other members of Team B and become one of the final members of iKON. [1]

Jinhwan is known for his vocals and dancing abilities, and is considered as one of the main vocalists and lead dancers of iKON. He has also been credited for writing and composing some of the group's songs.[3]

Aside from his activities with iKON, Jinhwan has also appeared in various television shows, including "Love Me actually" and "Mari and Me".[4][5]

In 2017, Insolent Housemates featured their lineup of housemates, which included Bobby, Dara, and Jinhwan. They shared the house and their daily lives, offering viewers an intimate look into their personalities and routines.[6]

As the third member of iKON to grace the King of Masked Singer stage, he participated as a mountain biker. He followed in the footsteps of Bobby and Ju-ne, who also appeared on the show. The King of Masked Singer provided him with an opportunity to showcase his vocal prowess while concealing his identity behind a mask. [7]

2022: The Indonesian Next Big Star and Musical Dracula as 'Dumitru'[edit]

Having successfully navigated their way through four shows both prior to and after their debut as K-pop idols, Jinhwan and Kim Donghyuk were invited to serve as judges on The Indonesian Next Big Star. Their extensive experience and knowledge in the entertainment industry enabled them to provide constructive feedback and valuable insights to aspiring singers.[8][9]Jinhwan and Yunhyeong joined forces with their fellow YG labelmates to participate in a game hosted by the Games Caterers. The event showcased their competitive spirits and camaraderie, as they engaged in various challenges and games.[10]

Jinhwan's exceptional artistry shone through in his participation in the "Dracula" musical, where he took on the role of Dumitru, a servant who remained devoted to Dracula for four centuries.

His outstanding performance in the production was lauded by both fans and critics, with many praising his commanding vocals and magnetic stage presence.

In his portrayal of Dumitru, Jinhwan brought to life a complex character who struggled with conflicting loyalties and personal demons, leaving a lasting impact on the audience.

The musical served as a testament to Jinhwan's multifaceted talent, showcasing not only his skills in K-pop but also his ability to thrive in the demanding and diverse world of musical theater.[11][12]

2013–2020: Blue Moon Album, Military Enlistment and Jay Final Live 'The Blue'[edit]

He made his highly anticipated solo debut on June 21, 2023, with the release of his digital single "Paradise". [13]This was followed by the release of his first solo mini album, "Blue Moon"[14], on July 18, 2023. These releases marked an exciting milestone in Jinhwan's career, allowing him to showcase his individual musical style and vocal talent apart from his work with iKON.

On July 7, 2023, he announce on his instagram that he will be enlisting in the military on July 20, 2023 and will serve as a social service worker.[15] Due to the earlier-than-expected enlistment date, Jinhwan had to make significant changes to his schedule in July. This included moving up the release of his highly anticipated solo album, as well as cancelling all tour dates for his Japan tour.[16]

Prior to his enlistment in the military, Jinhwan treated his fans to a final solo concert titled 'The Blue', which took place on July 18, 2023 at Venue Crest72. The concert was held both in-person and live-streamed online, allowing fans from all over the world to bid farewell to the iKON member before his departure. The event was a heartfelt and emotional one, as Jinhwan expressed his gratitude to his fans and shared his hopes for the future.[17][18]

Personal life[edit]

In terms of personality, Jinhwan is known for his caring and affectionate nature towards his bandmates, often being referred to as the "mom" of the group.[19] He is also known for his dedication to his work and his attention to detail.

Jinhwan has a close relationship with his family and has mentioned in interviews that his parents are very supportive of his music career.[20]

Philanthrophy[edit]

Jinhwan has participated in various charity events and has been praised for his philanthropic efforts.[21] Jinhwan and Chanwoo generously contributed 10 million won each towards the aid and relief efforts for the victims affected by the forest fire in Sokcho, located in the Gangwon Province of South Korea.[22]
