James Monroe McDonald, better known as "Captain" and brother Marcus L McDonald are identified with many western projects among them the building of the first toll road across the Siena Nevada mountains and the construction of the first telegraph lines both in California and the Pacific Northwest. The Captain was the first to discover the use of the glass insulator in the construction of telephone and telegraph lines. Inception of the telegraph system.[4]
