Joseph Kirkpatrick (1872–1936) was a British painter known for his watercolours, engravings and rare oil on canvas paintings of bucolic pastoral scenes.

Life[edit]

Joseph Kirkpatrick was born in Liverpool in 1872.

He studied at The Liverpool Institute and School of Art, the oldest art and design school in England outside London, under John Finnie. Kirkpatrick later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gabriel Ferrier.

He lived in Liverpool at 41 Castle Street and moved to Curdridge, Botly, Hants in 1915 until staying with a friend in London in 1916 before then moving then to Chelsea in the same year. Kirkpatrick exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts between 1898 and 1928 as well as at various other venues.

He lived in London for a number of years before moving to Wepham Hamlet near Burpham, Arundel in West Sussex in 1916.

Kirkpatrick who was a member of the Liver Sketching Club and the Liverpool Academy of Arts. He exhibited many works at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and at the RBSA, RA, RCamA and ROI. A painting by him is in the collection of Liverpool Bluecoat School[1]. The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool holds two of his works.

Most of his watercolor work portrays humble farming people at work and have a realist quality reminiscent of some of the French nineteenth century genre artists.
