Juan Hitters (Buenos Aires, 10 October 1966) is a prominent Argentine photographer. He has achieved fame for his artistic and commercial work, illustrating album covers, editorial publications, portraits of people and personalities and photographic series.
Hitters has taken numerous images to illustrate the covers of more than 100 albums by renowned international musicians such as Keith Jarrett, Dino Saluzzi, Einojuhani Rautavaara among others, for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon and ECM records in Germany, BIS in Sweden, Naxos in Hong Kong and MA in California.[1][2]
His photos also illustrate editorial projects for publications such as the New York Times, Elle, Wallpaper, Vogue, Architecture and Design, Dezeen, Condé Nast, Phaidon, GQ, El País, among others.[3][4]
He has also produced photographic campaigns for different international TV channels such as Fox, NatGeo, Telemundo, América TV, Discovery, Cosmopolitan TV, Televisa and Film & Arts.
Hitters has photographed international and Argentinean artists and cultural figures; Diego Maradona, Susana Giménez, Eduardo Galeano, among others.[5]
A former psychoanalyst, Hitters has been developing his artistic work since 1994. He sometimes publishes his work also under the name of 'hittersphoto'.
Hitters describes his work as "an ongoing search for the invisible part of things, those that we cannot see but we know exist." His photographs often capture the stillness and quietness of spaces and are characterized by their poetic and introspective nature.[4]
He has exhibited at the Architecture Biennale in Milan, Italy. In Argentina, he has participated in exhibitions at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, the Palais de Glace, the Centro Cultural General San Martín and the Centro Cultural Plaza Castelli, the Fototeca Latinoamericana, among others.[3][6]
His photographic work is part of the Permanent Collection of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires and the National Library of France.[7]
In 2014 he won the Grand Acquisition Prize in photography at the 103rd National Salon of the Visual Arts in Argentina, a competition organized by the Presidency of the Nation, considered the main photography prize in Argentina.[8][9]
Hitters has also developed in the academic and institutional sphere. Hitters has taught advertising photography at the Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA) and has lectured at the Universidad de San Andrés, the Triennale di Milano and Brown University, among other universities and institutions.[10]
