Julius Horsthuis (Amsterdam, 1980) is a Dutch digital artist, fractal artist and Visual effects artist. He is best known for his use of 3D fractals in immersive art installations and digital media.
Julius Horsthuis is the only child of musician Maurice Horsthuis and actress Elja Pelgrom..[1] At a young age he tried to enter film school but got rejected three times.[2]
Horsthuis started his career in the TV, film and visual effects industry, working on films and series such as Big Brother (franchise)|Big Brother, Baantjer, Koning van Katoren and Manchester by the Sea (film)|Manchester by the Sea.
Horsthuis published his first Fractal Short film on Vimeo in 2013 and his first VR project in 2016.[3]
His first collaboration with Artechouse was in 2018 called Fractal Worlds, and was described my The Washington Post as "Narcotic Dreaminess"[4] His second collaboration with Artechouse was in 2021 in New York City, called Geometric Properties.[5][6][7]
In 2019, Horsthuis produced fulldome film Fractal Time, which Forbes listed as one of the top 35 XR Installations of 2019.[8]
Horsthuis worked with and created music videos for various musicians such as Éric Serra[9], Meshuggah[10], David Levy, Michael Stearns[11], Michel van der Aa[12] and Dasha Rush[13]
Horsthuis mainly uses Mandelbulb3D as a tool to create his fractal worlds.[14]
