A jurist is a person who has in-depth knowledge of the law; someone who analyses and comments on the legal system. Typically, this individual is a specialised legal scholar—not necessarily one who has a formal legal degree or who works as a legal practitioner, but in certain jurisdictions, the word "jurist" may be used to refer to a judge. In the context of Roman law, a "jurist" (in English) is referred to as a jurisconsult (jurisconsulta).
When comparing the word jurist to other European languages, it is important to note that it is not identical with legal professional, which refers to anybody who has earned a professional law degree and is qualified to practise law in the United Kingdom.
A juror is a person who serves on a jury as a member of the panel.
