Justin Paul Perez (born May 12, 1981) is an American Artist, Cinematographer and Film Producer best known for his Key Artwork in the entertainment industry.
Paul was born in New York. He attended Hofstra University, Islip Middle School, and Islip High School. He studied film history at Hofstra University from 2000 to 2004. After college, he began designing websites for clients in the software industry. He successfully launched his own distribution website in 2008 and was accused in 2010 by Microsoft for software counterfeiting[1] and piracy.[2] After a year in court, the charges were formally dropped and Paul set out to pursue his passion for art in the visual mediums of photography and illustration.
By 2011 Paul had won several contests designing album and poster concepts for television, music and film. The same year, he was officially commissioned by Sony to create key art for the movie Priest (2011 film). Hyung Min-woo, the Korean illustrator who created the Priest graphic novel, sent Paul original character artwork in appreciation of his cinematic design. In 2012, Paul’s award winning, illustrated theatrical one sheet for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance; Spirit of Vengeance was featured by AMC, Regal, Cineworld and United Artists theater chains. The poster art displayed in more than 2000 theaters across the United States and was mentioned by more then a dozen film review websites including comingsoon.net[3], bloodydisgusting.com[4], comicbookmovie.com[5] and Dread Central[6]. Later, the artwork was acquired by Verizon Fios as the digital cover display of the film. It was featured in flagship Verizon stores throughout the country. The artwork also won accolades with the Internet Movie Poster Awards[7]. Later that year Sony commissioned Paul to create key art for the The Amazing Spider-Man (film). Following those projects, Paul developed key art concepts for X-Men: Days of Future Past and the John Wick (film) franchise.
In 2016, Paul created key art digital poster designs for the fifth season of the Arrow (TV series). He also designed a variant billboard display for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which was displayed in Times Square. He also assumed the role of co-creative director for Initium Eyewear where he helped develop optical styles for Marvel Studios and Robert Downey Jr.
In 2017 Paul created key art designs for AMC’s limited edition ticket program, helping to market their presentation of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. He was commissioned by Sony RED and Century Media Records to create album artwork for the Metal Industry.[8] He designed, photographed and illustrated multiple concepts for the American Heavy Metal Group Butcher Babies. He also designed the official cover art[9] and insert panel for their third album[10] titled “Lilith (album).”[11] Paul directed and animated the lyric video for “The Huntsman.” He also animated, directed and designed the official Kings and Queens Tour video for Nonpoint, Butcher Babies, Sumo Cyco and Cane Hill (band). In 2018 his concept art for Blumhouse Productions took social media by storm and his digital variant poster design for Insidious: The Last Key[12] was utilized in the marketing for the theatrical run of the film.
After seeing the success of his work in the music and film industries, Paul was commissioned by Vesuvian Media publishing to design novel artwork for authors who were being optioned for film and television projects with Boilermaker Entertainment. He created cinematic covers for Author Elizabeth Isaacs[13] The Scythian Trials, Author Anna M Elias The Vessels, Author Mary Tings Helix, Authors Garreth Worthington and Stu Jones It takes Death to Reach a Star.
He was commissioned in 2019 by MGM studios to develop concept art for the upcoming direct sequel to the original Robocop film, RoboCop Returns.
Most recently, Paul has taken on the role of both Director of Photography and Producer for the upcoming American horror film, Awaken the Reaper which stars Academy Award Winner Louis Gossett Jr., Lance Henriksen and Robin Curtis. The film is co-produced, written and directed by Dave Campfield. Awaken the Reaper is currently in production and slated for a 2023 release date.
