In the United States, Kentucky is a state located in the Southeastern area. It is bordered to the north by Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio; to the east by West Virginia and Virginia; to the south by Tennessee and Missouri; and to the west by Missouri and Tennessee. It is the Ohio River that defines the northern boundary of the Commonwealth. Frankfort serves as the state's capital, while Louisville and Lexington serve as the state's two biggest cities. The state's population was estimated to be around 4.5 million in 2020.

Kentucky was joined to the Union as the 15th state on June 1, 1792, resulting in a break with Virginia as a result of the admission. It is referred to as the "Bluegrass State," a moniker derived from Kentucky bluegrass, a type of grass that can be found in many of the state's pastures and has historically sustained the thoroughbred horse industry in the state's central region.
