Kerry Warkia is a New Zealand film producer and director. ^[1]

Early life and education

Warkia's father is from Papua New Guinea and her mother was born in Scotland.^[2] Warkia grew up in Papua New Guinea, where she attended school in the city of Lae. ^[3] Whilst at school, she developed an interest in performing. ^[4] Warkia received a scholarship to Unitec Drama School in Auckland, New Zealand, where she studied. ^[5]

Career

Warkia and her husband, Kiel McNaughton ^[6], founded Brown Sugar Apple Grunt Productions in 2006. ^[7]

Warkia is deeply committed to telling Māori and Pasifika stories and has been the driving force behind some of New Zealand's most innovative television and web series. ^[8] Warkia has an extensive list of many films that she has produced, most notably Waru ^[9], which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2017 ^[10] and Vai ^[11] which premiered at the Berlinale Film Festival in 2019. ^[12]
