Kerry Warkia is a New Zealand film producer and director. [1]
Early life and education
Warkia's father is from Papua New Guinea and her mother was born in Scotland.[2] Warkia grew up in Papua New Guinea, where she attended school in the city of Lae. [3] Whilst at school, she developed an interest in performing. [4] Warkia received a scholarship to Unitec Drama School in Auckland, New Zealand, where she studied. [5]
Career
Warkia and her husband, Kiel McNaughton [6], founded Brown Sugar Apple Grunt Productions in 2006. [7]
Warkia is deeply committed to telling Māori and Pasifika stories and has been the driving force behind some of New Zealand's most innovative television and web series. [8] Warkia has an extensive list of many films that she has produced, most notably Waru [9], which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2017 [10] and Vai [11] which premiered at the Berlinale Film Festival in 2019. [12]
