Korean Americans

Korean Americans are people who are of Korean descent and are mostly from South Korea. Korean Americans account for approximately 0.56 percent of the United States population, or approximately 1.82 million people, in 2015, and are the fifth-largest Asian American subgroup after the Chinese Americans, Filipino Americans, Indian Americans, and Vietnamese Americans communities, according to the Pew Research Center. The United States is home to the world's biggest Korean diaspora population, which is concentrated in the state of California.

Following the Individuals's Republic of China, the United States has the second-largest Korean population living outside of Korea, according to the 2010 Census, with roughly 1.7 million people of Korean heritage residing in the nation. In terms of estimated Korean American populations, the ten states with the largest estimated Korean American populations were California (452,000; 1.2 percent), New York (141,000; 0.7 percent), New Jersey (94,000); Virginia (71,000; 0.9 percent); Texas (68,000; 0.3 percent); Washington (62,400); Georgia (51,500; 0.5 percent); Maryland (49,000; 0.8 percent); Pennsylvania (41,000; 0.3 percent); and Colorado (41,500; 0.3 percent) (31,000, 0.4 percent ). With a Korean American population of 1.8 percent, or 23,200 persons, Hawaii had the largest concentration of Korean Americans.

Bergen County, New Jersey, in the New York City Metropolitan Area, has the highest percentage of Korean Americans in the country, according to the 2010 United States Census (which was increased to 6.9 percent by the 2011 American Community Survey). Bergen County has the highest percentage of Korean Americans of any county in the United States. According to the 2010 Census, all of the nation's top ten municipalities by percentage of Korean population are located within Bergen County, and the concentration of Korean Americans in Palisades Park, New Jersey, also within Bergen County, is the highest of any municipality in the United States, accounting for 52 percent of the population. The Korean community in Georgia grew at an 88.2 percent annual pace between 1990 and 2000, making it the state with the greatest population growth in the United States during that time period. In the Atlanta metropolitan region, there is a considerable Korean American community, which is concentrated mostly in Gwinnett County (2.7 percent Korean) and Fulton County (1.0 percent Korean).
