Kwan Nyom Hapkido is a style of Hapkido, founded in June 1999 by Grandmaster Geoff J. Booth.[1]
Traditionally, Hapkido is taught from a set of responses to set grabs, e.g. students learn a set of 10 self defence techniques from a wrist grab, or a set of 10 self defence techniques from a straight punch. However, Kwan Nyom Hapkido takes a concept such as an arm bar, s lock or v lock, and teaches students to apply that concept regardless of where the attack or grab is.[1]
Kwan Nyom Hapkido is practised internationally by schools within the International Hapkido Alliance (IHA).[2] [3][4] Participating countries include: Australia (headquarters located in Sydney), Croatia, Finland, Mexico, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Spain, Netherlands, England and America.[5]
Kwan Nyom Hapkido was founded in June 1999 in Sydney, Australia by Grandmaster Geoff Booth with assistance from members of the Australian Hapkido Alliance (AHA).
Kwan Nyom is Korean for "School of Concepts".[3]
Kwan Nyom Hapkido practises stances, strikes, kicks, joint locks, throwing, punch defence, kick defence, ground defence, falling and weaponry. Colour belts move through a structured syllabus, whereby beginner students are taught foundational techniques and movements which are later incorporated into advanced techniques as they progress. At each colour belt, a set of strikes, kicks, and falls are taught, and each colour belt focuses on different self defence concepts. The following overview is based on the most recent Kwan Nyom Hapkido syllabus update in 2021.[6]
Self defence concepts taught at each colour belt:
From Blue Belt onwards, students are also required to practice lock flows.
The standard uniform worn by IHA colour belts is a plain black dobok. The badges include the regional badge on the front, the Korean flag on the left arm and the IHA badge on the right arm.
The uniform for 1st to 3rd Degree Black Belts is a white diamond cross stitch jacket. The stripes on the black belt will reflect the degree of the Black Belt, e.g. 1 gold stripe for 1st Degree Black Belt, 2 gold stripes for 2nd Degree etc.
The uniform for 4th to 6th Degrees is a black diamond cross stitch jacket with white thread. The belt will have no stripes, however it will have a title embroidered on it. The title for 4th Degree is Sah Bum Nim, and the title for 5th and 6th Degree is Kwan Jung Nim. Within the IHA, the title of Master can be earned after one has earned the rank of 5th Degree. Masters are denoted by the Korean writing for Kwan Nyom Hapkido in white print on the back of their black jacket.
The uniform for 7th to 9th Degree is a black diamond cross stitch jacke with yellow thread. The belt will have no stripes, though it will have the title of Kwan Jung Nim embroidered on it until one reaches 8th Degree, where the title changes to Chong Kwan Jung Nim. It is at 8th Degree that the title of Grandmaster is earned. Grandmasters are denoted by the Korean writing for Kwan Nyom Hapkido in yellow print on the back of their black jacket.[7]
