Specialist literature, which is often seen as a disputed term, discusses different points of view, comparing Eastern and Western methods to leadership, as well as (within the West) North American vs European approaches to management.

A method of social influence by which a person may enlist the assistance and support of others to achieve a shared and ethical goal is defined as "leadership" in academic settings in the United States. While some have argued against the more traditional managerial view of leadership, which holds that it is something that one individual possesses or owns because of their position or authority, others have argued in favour of the complex nature of leadership, which can be found at all levels of an organisation, both within formal roles and outside of them.
