A leather jacket is a kind of garment that is of jacket length and is often worn on top of other gear or items of clothing. Leather jackets are constructed from the tanned skin of different animals. The leather material is commonly dyed black, or different shades of brown; nevertheless, it is possible to get a broad variety of colours with this process. Leather jackets can be designed for a variety of purposes, and certain styles have become associated with particular subcultures. These subcultures include greasers, motorcyclists and bikers, mobsters, military aviators (especially during and directly after World War II), and music subcultures (punks, goths, metalheads, and rivetheads). These individuals have worn the garment for protective or fashionable reasons, and on occasion to create an intimidating appearance.

Hides that are excess from the meat business are used in the production of most contemporary leather jackets, which are manufactured in Pakistan, India, Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Synthetic materials that have the appearance of leather, such as polyurethane and PVC, can be used in place of genuine animal hide leather depending on the requirements of the wearer, such as those who adhere to vegan lifestyles, or for financial reasons, as synthetic fibres have a tendency to be more affordable than genuine leather.
