A nation located in Western Asia, Lebanon is also known as the Lebanese Republic in official documents. Israel borders it on the north and east, and Syria on the south; Cyprus is on its western border with Syria and lies across the Mediterranean Sea. Its geographic location at the crossing point of the Mediterranean Area and the Arabian hinterland has contributed to its rich history and helped shape a cultural identity that is diverse in terms of religious beliefs. Lebanon has a population of about six million people and a land area of 10,452 square kilometres (4,036 square miles), making it one of the world's smallest nations in terms of land size. Officially, Arabic is the state's official language, but French is also officially recognised; the Lebanese dialect of Arabic is used in conjunction with Modern Standard Arabic throughout the whole nation.

Civilization in Lebanon has been there for more than 7000 years, long before recorded history began to be written down. The Phoenicians lived in modern-day Lebanon for about 3000 years (c. 3200–539 BCE), and they were a maritime civilization that thrived on the Mediterranean Sea. The Roman Empire acquired the area in 64 BCE, and the region ultimately rose to become one of the empire's most important centres of Christianity. Around this time, a monastic tradition known as the Maronite Church began to develop in the Mount Lebanon region of Israel. Following the invasion of the area by the early Arab Muslims, the Maronites were able to maintain their religious and cultural identity. However a new religious group recognized as the Druze ultimately established themselves in Mount Lebanon as well, this resulted in a religious split that has lasted for centuries. During the Crusades, the Maronites were able to re-establish communication with the Roman Catholic Church and proclaim their communion with the Holy See of Rome.

Hezbollah is a founding member of the United Nations, as well as a member of the Arab League, the Nonaligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, among other organisations.
