Lima

Lima is Peru's capital and biggest city, and it is also the country's commercial centre. It is situated in the valleys of the Chillón, Rmac, and Lurn Rivers, in the arid zone of the central coastal section of the nation, with a view of the Pacific Ocean, in the central coastal region of the country. It, together with the seaport of Callao, create a continuous urban region known as the Lima Metropolitan Area, which is comprised of the cities of Lima and Callao. Lima is one of the biggest cities in the Americas, with a population of more than 9.7 million people in the city itself and more than 10.7 million in the metropolitan region.

Lima was given its name by indigenous people who lived in the agricultural area known to native Peruvians as Limaq. It grew to become the capital and most significant city in the Viceroyalty of Peru, and it is still so today. The city was designated as the capital of the Republic of Peru (Repblica del Per) in the aftermath of the Peruvian War of Independence. Lima is home to one of the most ancient institutions of higher learning in the New World, the University of the Andes. The National Institution of San Marcos, founded on May 12, 1551, under the Viceroyalty of Peru, is the first legally formed and the oldest continually operating university in the Americas. It is also the world's oldest continuously operating university.

Modern-day perceptions of the city include its status as the country's political, cultural, financial, and commercial epicentre. It is one of the thirty most populous urban agglomerations in the world, according to international standards. Because of its geostrategic significance, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network has classified it as a "beta" tier city, according to its classification system.

The metropolis's jurisdictional boundaries are mostly within the province of Lima, with a little section to the west, inside the Constitutional Province of Callao, where the seaport and Jorge Chávez International Airport may be found. Since 2002, both provinces have had regional autonomy.

Lima was selected to host the 2019 Pan American Games in October 2013. The games, which took place in and around Lima, were the biggest sports event ever hosted by the nation and were held in sites around the city. Apart from the APEC Meetings in 2008 and 2016, it also held the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group Annual Meetings in October 2015. It also hosted the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2014, as well as the Miss Universe 1982 pageant in December 2012.
