Long Island institution, also known as LIU, is a private institution located in the state of New York, United States, and is comprised of two primary campuses: LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn. It provides more than 500 academic programmes across all of its major campuses, in addition to other non-residential locations and online. LIU participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I and is the host institution for the annual George Polk Awards in journalism.
In 1926, the New York State Education Department created Long Island University (LIU) in Brooklyn with the mission of providing individuals from "all walks of life" with "education that is both effective and reasonably priced." The campus of LIU Brooklyn may be found in Downtown Brooklyn, namely at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and DeKalb Avenue. The main structure is connected to the movie theatre known as the Paramount Theatre, which operated in the 1920s and is now known as the Schwartz Gymnasium. The building has kept a lot of the original ornamental design and has a fully functional Wurlitzer organ that rises from under the flooring of the basketball court. The site has nine academic buildings, a leisure and sporting complex that includes athletic fields that meet the standards for Division I competition, one on-campus residential building, two neighbouring residential complexes, and a parking facility that is next to the school. Additionally, the campus is the location of LIU Global, a four-year bachelor's degree programme that gives students the opportunity to live and study abroad in eight different countries over the course of eight semesters. Home to the George Polk Awards for excellence in journalism, the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds compete in NCAA Division I, and the Kumble Theatre for the Performing Arts is located on the LIU Brooklyn campus.
