Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat München, more commonly known as LMU or simply the University of Munich, is a public research institution that can be found in Munich, Germany. In German, the university's full name is Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat München.

The Institution of Munich has the position of Germany's sixth-oldest university that has been open during its entire history. The university was first established in Ingolstadt in 1472 by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut. In 1800, King Maximilian I of Bavaria relocated the university to Landshut because Ingolstadt was under attack by the French. In 1826, King Ludwig I of Bavaria moved the university to its current location in Munich. King Maximilian I of Bavaria bestowed the honorary title of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat to the institution in the year 1802, naming it in recognition of both himself and the original founder of the university.

There have been a total of 43 Nobel Prize winners connected to the University of Munich (as of October 2020). Among them were Wilhelm Rontgen, Max Planck, Werner Heisenberg, Otto Hahn and Thomas Mann. In addition to that, Pope Benedict XVI was both a student and a lecturer at the school. Among its notable alumni, faculty and researchers are inter alia Rudolf Peierls, Josef Mengele, Richard Strauss, Walter Benjamin, Joseph Campbell, Muhammad Iqbal, Marie Stopes, Wolfgang Pauli, Bertolt Brecht, Max Horkheimer, Karl Loewenstein, Carl Schmitt, Gustav Radbruch, Ernst Cassirer, Ernst Bloch, Konrad Adenauer. Under the auspices of the German Universities Excellence Initiative, the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) was only recently recognised as a "University of Excellence." In addition to being a member of LERU, LMU is also a member of U15. When compared to universities throughout the world, Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) consistently achieves very high rankings and has a strong academic reputation.

The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) is now the university in Germany with the second-highest number of matriculated students. During the winter semester of 2018-2019, the institution had a total of 51,606 students enrolled. Freshmen accounted for 9,424 of these students, while overseas students made up the remaining 8,875, making up around 17 percent of the entire student body. Without including the university hospital in its calculations, the university's operating budget for 2018 was 734,9 million euros in funding; with the university hospital in its calculations, the institution's operating budget totaled around 1.94 billion euros in financing.
