Maria Dmitriyevka Kornilieva (1793-1850) was born in Tobolsk, Russia to a well-known family of merchants.[1] She married Ivan Pavlovich Mendelee, a teacher, in 23 July 1809[2] at the age of 16 and gave birth to 14-17 children, including famed chemist Dmitry Mendeleev.[3] Upon noticing Dmitry's giftedness for the sciences, she travelled across Russia seeking universities that would accept him. [4]
