Massimiliano Civica (born February 27th, 1974 in Rieti, Italy) is an Italian theatre director.
After graduating in Methodology and Criticism of the Performing Arts at La Sapienza University of Rome, he attended the Odin Teatret by Eugenio Barba and graduated with a degree in stage direction from the Accademia Nazionale di Arte Drammatica Silvio D'Amico|National Academy of Dramatic Art of Italy. Since then he worked in the Teatro della Tosse in Genoa, collaborating with Emanuele Luzzati and Tonino Conte. In 2007 he was appointed artistic director of the Teatro della Tosse, becoming the youngest artistic director in Italy[1] and creating the three-year project Facciamo insieme teatro[2], which won the ETI Prize.
Later his The Merchant of Venice won the 2008 Ubu Award for best direction[3], and the following year the Vittorio Mezzogiorno Award[4].Then, in 2010 he directed William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, whith little success.
From this unsuccess he inaugurated a phase of artistic rebirth. This phase passed through Soprattutto l'anguria (Especially Watermelon), a show on the relationship between two brothers, and culminated with Alcestis by Euripides, winner of the 2015 Ubu Prize for Best Direction[5]. This show achieved a great success also thanks to the actresses Daria Deflorian, Monica Demuru and Monica Piseddu; and the collaboration with Daniela Salernitano.
He then devoted himself to teaching: he held acting workshops, was appointed university lecturer at the chair of Methodology of Performance Criticism at La Sapienza University and directing teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Genoa. Finally, he is entrusted with the teaching of directing and theatrical acting at the National Academy of Dramatic Art[5].
In 2016 he directed Un quaderno per l'inverno (A Notebook for the Winter), a play written by Armando Pirozzi. The show won the Ubu Award for Best Direction [6](ex aequo with Massimo Popolizio) and for best Italian play.
Since January 2018 he has been artistic consultant to the management of the Teatro Metastasio in Prato[7].
He teaches theatre direction and acting techniques at the National Academy of Dramatic Art.
