McGill University is a public research university in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with a campus in the city. McGill University was established in 1821 by royal charter granted by King George IV. The university remains part of James McGill, a Scottish merchant whose bequest in 1813 founded the university's precursor, University of McGill College (or simply McGill College); the name was officially changed to McGill University in 1885. McGill Institution provides degrees and certifications in more than 300 disciplines of study, and its students have the best average entry grades of any university in Canada. In the five main faculties, which are arts, science, medicine, education, engineering, and management respectively, the vast majority of students are enrolled. McGill's student population is the most globally diversified of any medical-doctoral research institution in the country, with 32.2 percent of its students hailing from more than 150 countries, making it the most international of any in the country. Furthermore, more than 41% of students were born outside of Canada, according to Statistics Canada. Major educational journals consistently place McGill among the world's best institutions, and the university has retained the top spot in the nation in the annual Maclean's Canadian University Rankings for the last 16 years.
