Michael Coates (born 1956) has successfully led and managed communications and government affairs companies in Canada and the United States, Australia and Latin America.

Named one of Canada’s “Top 50 Most Powerful People” [1] by Canadian Business, top 10 lobbyists among the country’s Top 100 Most Influential People in Government & Politics by The Hill Times, Michael Coates has provided advice and counsel to corporate boards like BHP Billiton, Toronto Stock Exchange and the Chinese National Overseas Oil Corporation (CNOOC). He has also served on commercial, educational and not-for-profit boards.

Retiring as Hill+Knowlton Strategies[2] Strategies Global Vice Chairman in March 2017, Michael Coates joined the Cronos Group as a Corporate Director in June of 2018. At the same time, he and Kory Teneycke also co-founded Rubicon Strategy Inc[3]., a data and content Government Relations Company in July 2018, where Michael continues to serve as its Executive Chairman. In addition, Michael Coates was a member of Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s Transition Committee in 2018. More recently he has served on the Board of Trustees of the Royal Ontario Museum.
