Minneapolis has been the most populous city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county headquarters of Hennepin County. It is the state capital of Minnesota. In 2020, it will be the 46th most populated city in the United States, with a population of 429,954. The Twin Cities are comprised of seven counties that include Minneapolis and its neighbour Saint Paul. The Minneapolis–St. Paul–Bloomington, MN–WI metropolitan region has a population of 3.6 million people in 2019; twenty-two counties make up the combined statistical area, which has a population of 4.0 million people and is the sixteenth biggest metropolitan area in the United States.
In Minnesota, Minneapolis is located on both sides of the Mississippi River, just north of the river's confluence with the Minnesota River, and it shares a border with Saint Paul, the state's capital. As the home of one of the nation's finest park systems, the city is awash in water. There are thirteen lakes and marshes in the city as well as the Mississippi River, streams, and waterfalls, all of which are linked by parkways that form part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway. Between Chicago and Seattle, the city and surrounding area has the greatest population and serves as the main economic hub for the region. Minneapolis was originally known as a lumber market, but it later became known as the flour milling centre of the world, and it has retained its financial power to this day.
Minneapolis is home to the Guthrie Theater and the First Avenue nightclub, which serve as anchors for the city's vibrant music and performing arts communities. The city served as a launching pad for some of the most important artists of the twentieth century, including Bob Dylan and Prince, which reflects the region's reputation as a hub of folk, funk, and alternative rock. Musicians Lizzo, Brother Ali, Atmosphere, and Dessa came from the hip-hop and rap scenes.
During the month of May 2020, the Minneapolis Police Department's Derek Chauvin, a white officer, shot and killed George Floyd, a black man, in the city. There were worldwide demonstrations, and the city of Minneapolis and racism were thrust into the national and international limelight as a consequence.
