Monash University is a public research university with its main campus located in Melbourne, which is located in the state of Victoria in Australia. It was established in 1958 and is the state's second oldest university. It was given its current name in honour of the notable World War I commander Sir John Monash. There are many campuses that make up the institution, four of which are located in the state of Victoria (Clayton, Caulfield, Peninsula, and Parkville), and one of which is located in Malaysia. In addition, Monash University has a research and teaching centre in Prato, Italy; a graduate research school in Mumbai, India; graduate schools in Suzhou, China; and Tangerang, Indonesia; all of these are located in Asia. Courses from Monash University may also be taken in a number of other countries, including South Africa.

Monash is home to a number of important research facilities, such as the Victorian College of Pharmacy, the Australian Stem Cell Centre, the Monash Law School, the Australian Synchrotron, the Monash Science Technology Research and Innovation Precinct (STRIP), and more than one hundred research centres. There are also seventeen co-operative research centres. Its overall revenue for 2019 was more than $2.72 billion (AUD), while its income from external research was around $462 million. Over 55,000 students were enrolled as undergraduates at Monash in 2019, while over 25,000 students were enrolled as graduate students. It has more candidates than any other institution in Victoria, and that makes it the most competitive option.

Monash University is the only Australian institution to have membership in the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Institutions, and National Academies. In addition, Monash is one of Australia's Group of Eight research universities and an associate member of the ASAIHL. The École des Mines de Paris (Mines ParisTech) ranking places Monash as one of the institutions in Australia to be rated based on the number of graduates who are listed as CEOs in the 500 biggest firms in the world. According to the QS World University Rankings, Monash University is typically positioned between 55 and 70 of the best institutions in the world.
