Captain Montagu Montagu (1787-1863) was a Captain in the Royal Navy, and an author and autograph collector. His published works include original poetry, as well as translations of Friedrich Schiller and Giovanni Battista Casti[1], religious controversy, and editions of the Psalms.
Montagu entered the Royal Navy in 1799. He was appointed Captain on 2 November 1805.[2]
He died at Bath on July 3 1863.[3]
Montagu bequeathed a collection of manuscripts and printed books to the Bodleian Libraries in 1863. This collection consists of c.700 volumes in various branches of literature.[4] These dated from the 16th- 19th century and included copies of work by classical authors, English and Italian poetry, and papers relating to the works of Shakespeare.[5]
Specific works include 90 editions and versions of the Psalter, works on Psalmody, editions of Anacreon, Horace, Juvenal, Phaedrus, Petrarch, Boileau and Jean de La Fontaine|La Fontaine. The collection also contains topographical and biographical works with additional engravings.[4] A small sketch of the profile of Napoleon I, by the well-known Italian artist Giuseppe Longhi, also accompanied the collection.[3]
