Kenya's capital and biggest city, Nairobi, is the country's administrative centre. The name is derived from the Maasai term Enkare Nairobi, which translates as "cool water," and is a reference to the Nairobi River, which runs through the city and provides the city with its cold water. The city proper has a population of 4,397,073 people according to the 2019 census, while the metropolitan region had a population of 9,354,580 people according to the same census. The city is referred to as the "Green City in the Sun" by many residents.

Nairobi was established in 1899 as a rail station on the Uganda - Kenya Railway by the colonial authority in British East Africa. It is the capital of Kenya. The town flourished swiftly and was able to dethrone Mombasa as the country's capital in 1907. Nairobi was designated as the capital of the Republic of Kenya when the country gained independence in 1963. At the height of Kenya's colonial era, the city developed into a major centre for the colony's coffee, tea, and sisal industries. The city is located in Kenya's southern central region, at an elevation of 1,795 metres above sea level (5,889 ft).

Aside from being home to the Kenyan Parliament Buildings, Nairobi is also home to hundreds of Kenyan enterprises as well as over 100 significant foreign corporations and organisations, including the United Nations Environment Program (UN Environment). A well-established centre for business and culture, Nairobi is a must-visit destination. The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) is one of the biggest and oldest stock exchanges in Africa, and it is the second-oldest in the world. When it comes to trading volume, it is Africa's fourth biggest exchange, with the ability to process 10 million deals each day. Additionally, it is home to the Nairobi National Park, which has a vast wildlife reserve. Current administration of Nairobi is under the Nairobi Metropolitan Service.
