Garden City, New York is home to Nassau Community College, sometimes known simply as NCC. NCC is a public community college. It is a component of the State University of New York and was established in the year 1959.

In 1959, the State University of New York (SUNY) decided to establish Nassau Community College as an affiliate institution. The first day of sessions at the institution were conducted on February 1, 1960, in an ancient courtroom, and there were a total of 632 students enrolled. As a result of the closure of Mitchel Air Force Base, the college was able to acquire significant acreage, as well as structures, on what is now known as Mitchel Field. These properties will be used to establish the institution's new campus.

The amount of associate degrees that Nassau Community College confers each year makes it the institution that confers the most associate degrees in the state of New York and the third most associate degrees of any two-year public college with a single campus in the United States. At Nassau Community College, the areas of music, mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, civil engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, sound recording, and nursing have proven to be among the most popular and successful academic majors.

NCC provides students with the opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts, with an emphasis on humanities and social sciences; specialised Associate of Arts and Associate of Science transfer degrees; Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees and certificate programmes designed to serve the immediate employment goals of students; and specialised Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees in a variety of fields of study.

The institution provides its students with access to an astronomy observatory that it runs.
