New Delhi is the nation's capital and the administrative centre of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT). The Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, and the Supreme Court of India are all located in New Delhi, which serves as the administrative centre for all three parts of the Indian government. New Delhi is a municipality in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, administered by the National Development and Management Corporation (NDMC). It consists mostly of Lutyens' Delhi and a few nearby suburbs. The municipal territory is a component of a larger administrative district, the New Delhi district, which includes many other municipalities.
Despite the fact that the terms Delhi and New Delhi are often used interchangeably to refer to the National Capital Territory of Delhi, these are two separate entities, with the Delhi Municipality and the New Delhi district each constituting a relatively small portion of the megacity of Delhi in terms of land area and population. The National Capital Region is a considerably bigger entity that includes the whole National Capital Territory (NCT) as well as nearby districts in neighbouring states, such as Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurgaon, and Faridabad, among others.
When George V lay the foundation stone for New Delhi at the Delhi Durbar in 1911, he was the first monarch to do so. Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, two British architects, were responsible for its design. Viceroy and Governor-General Irwin officiated at the official opening of the new capital on February 13, 1931.
