Legally known as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle University is a public research institution in the United Kingdom that has its main campus in Newcastle upon Tyne, which is located in North East England. It has campuses outside of the United States in Singapore and Malaysia. The institution is a member of the Russell Group, which is an organisation of research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom, and it is known as a "red brick" university.

The School of Medicine and Surgery (later called the College of Medicine) was created in 1834, and the College of Physical Science (later renamed Armstrong College) was formed in 1871. These two institutions laid the groundwork for the development of the university. The Durham Colleges came to form the other part of the federal University of Durham, while these two colleges came to constitute the bigger division of the university. In 1937, King's College was established as a result of the merger of the institutions located in Newcastle. King's College was transformed into the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963 as a result of an act passed by the British Parliament.

The university is organised into three colleges: the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; the Faculty of Medical Sciences; and the Faculty of Science, Agriculture, and Engineering. Each of these faculties specialises in a certain academic field. The university provides approximately 175 full-time undergraduate degree programmes in a diverse array of subject areas including the arts, sciences, engineering, and medicine. Additionally, the university provides approximately 340 postgraduate taught and research programmes in a variety of fields of study. The organisation had an annual revenue of £523.6 million for the fiscal year 2020–21, with £99.6 million coming from research grants and contracts. The institution's expenditures were £518.9 million. The European Union research portfolio held by Newcastle University is now one of the biggest in the UK.
