Norimaki Synthesizer

The Norimaki Synthesizer is a device created by Meiji University that will provide the purpose of simulating taste. The device is comprised of 5 gels, each containing an electrolyte solution pertaining to a specific taste.

The device works by forming a circuit between the user's hand and tongue, allowing for ion electrophoresis to occur, causing the electrolytes in the gels to move farther away from the user's tongue. The electric current sent through each gel can be altered to allow for some tastes to be more defined than others.

The electrolytes used are: Glycine (sweet), sodium chloride (salty), citric acid (sour), magnesium chloride (bitter), and glutamic sodium/monosodium glutamate (umami). Researchers claim to have successfully simulated multiple tastes, ranging from candy to sushi.

As of May 27th, 2020, the device is still in the prototype phase and will not be released to the public for the foreseeable future.[1]
