Obesity medicine

A subspecialty of internal medicine known as obesity medicine focuses on providing patients with obesity with a variety of treatment options. Obesity medicine takes into consideration the multifactorial aetiology of obesity, which includes components from behaviour, development, environment, epigenetics, genetics, nutrition, physiology, and psychological factors. We have found that in order to treat a patient population that is obese, it is necessary to possess a particular skill set as well as a certain knowledge base. Our understanding of the complexities of obesity continues to grow as time goes on, and we have concluded that in order to do so, certain knowledge and skill sets are necessary. Clinicians working in the field should have an understanding of how a wide variety of factors, such as the diversity of the microbiota in the gut, the regulation of food intake and energy balance through enteroendocrine and neuroregulation, and the physiology of adipokines, all contribute to obesity. Physicians who specialise in obesity medicine should be adept at determining the causes that have contributed to the patient's obesity and should also be familiar with the many treatment options available for the condition, including behavioural therapy, medication, and surgical procedures. Because no two persons who are obese are the same, it is essential to address each patient as an individual in order to identify the causes that contributed to that patient's obesity and devise a treatment plan that would be successful for that patient. The American Board of Obesity Medicine offers a board certification programme for physicians who wish to demonstrate their expertise in the field of obesity medicine.
