An electronic alternative to conventional paper methods such as cheques and money orders, PayPal Holdings, Inc. is an American multinational financial technology firm that operates an online payments system in the majority of countries that permit online money transfers. The firm processes payments for a variety of commercial clients, including online retailers, auction websites, and many others, for which it charges a fee.

PayPal was originally founded in 1998 under the name Confinity, and in 2002 it had its initial public offering. In the latter half of that year, it was acquired by eBay as a fully owned company and given a value of $1.5 billion. In 2015, eBay distributed PayPal to its stockholders, at which point PayPal reclaimed its status as a standalone business. On the list of the 500 biggest firms in terms of revenue that was compiled by Fortune in 2022, the company came in at position 143.

At the cost of the more conventional banking industry, the COVID-19 epidemic has spurred the expansion of digital payment systems such as PayPal. As a direct consequence of this development, PayPal's stock is projected to rise to as much as 78% in the year 2020 as of October. Since July 2007, PayPal has been operating within the European Union as a bank established in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Luxembourg is the location of the European headquarters for PayPal, whereas Singapore is the location of the company's worldwide headquarters. In 2006, PayPal established a technology centre in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the following year, in 2007, the company established a software development facility in Chennai, India. In the same year, 2007, PayPal established a data service facility on the north side of Austin, Texas, as well as a second operations centre in La Vista, Nebraska. Both of these locations were inaugurated in October. In 2011, PayPal opened a second customer support centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, joining similar customer support operations located in Berlin, Germany; Chandler, Arizona; Dublin and Dundalk, Ireland; Omaha, Nebraska; and Shanghai, China. Additionally, the company started the hiring process for new employees at this location. In the year 2014, PayPal established a new global operations centre in the city of Kuala Lumpur.
