Pearl Lam Galleries is a contemporary art gallery founded by Pearl Lam. The gallery plays a central role in Asia's contemporary art sphere and is celebrated for its intellectual and cultural endeavors that re-evaluate conventional understandings of Chinese cultural practice.[1][2]
The gallery exhibits some of the most influential Chinese and international artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. There are two gallery spaces in Hong Kong and Shanghai.[3]
Pearl Lam Galleries was established in 2005, with its first fine art gallery in Shanghai.[4]
Pearl Lam Galleries’s mission is to “present museum-quality exhibitions that re-evaluate and challenge perceptions of cultural practice in Asia.” The gallery facilitates international dialogue and cross-cultural exchange between the East and West. It showcases various Chinese and international artists who contribute to reimagining China's cultural place in the global landscape.[5]
Pearl Lam Galleries’s flagship gallery is in Shanghai, in the Bund district. In 2012, Pearl Lam opened a gallery in the Pedder Building in Hong Kong and renamed it from its former name, Contrasts Gallery, to Pearl Lam Galleries. Its inaugural exhibition, curated by Gao Minglu, was recognized as the best gallery show of the year.[6]
As Pearl Lam Galleries became a popular Chinese art locale, it produced various events and solo exhibitions. Pearl Lam Galleries has presented at major international art fairs, including Art Cologne, Art Basel, Frieze Masters, and West Bund Art and Design.[7]
Notable artists represented by Pearl Lam Galleries include London-based Philip Colbert, self-proclaimed as a "pioneer of the metaverse" and creator of project The Lobstars. The gallery also represents British artist Sam Cox, known as Mr. Doodle, who is known for adorning his entire Kent home with graphic, graffiti-like imagery.[8][9]
