Philosopher of the Sea is a documentary film that chronicles the remarkable five-year journey of Sven Yrvind, a Swedish sailor and adventurer who sets out to construct his boats and sail non-stop from Ireland to New Zealand.[1] Produced by Annika Gritti at The Motor Moving Pictures AB and directed by Andreas Eidhagen, the film offers a rare glimpse into Yrvind's adventures and inner journey, exploring how we live our lives.[2]
At 83, Yrvind is widely regarded as a world celebrity for his solo voyages across the oceans.[3] Over five years, the documentary follows him closely as he prepares for his ambitious journey, spanning almost 15,000 miles and estimated to take 300 days.[4] Despite the apparent risks involved, Yrvind believes that his journey is a sane pursuit, and through his experiences, he questions the nature of consumer society, aging, and death.[5]
Philosopher of the Sea is not just a film about sailing but a journey into the philosophical and psychological questions that an 83-year-old adventurer faces as he approaches the end of his life.[6] Through Yrvind's stories and those of his friends, the documentary reveals his background and what motivates him to lead a hermit's life at sea, far removed from conventional society.[7]
The feature-length film, which runs for approximately 80 minutes, is set to premiere on Viaplay in the spring of 2023. The executive producer at Viaplay Group is Magnus Coinberg, and the film is produced by The Motor Moving Pictures AB and co-produced by Claes Helander AB. Philosopher of the Sea is an extraordinary film that will inspire and captivate audiences by portraying one man's unique journey across the world's oceans.[8]
