Whether it be a painting, picture, sculpture, or other creative depiction of a person, a portrait is characterised by the prominence of the face and its emotion. The goal is to convey the resemblance, personality, and even the mood of the individual being depicted. Therefore, a portrait is usually considered to be a constructed picture of a person who is in a stationary posture, rather than an uncomposed snapshot in photography. A portrait is often shown with the subject gazing straight at the painter or photographer, in order to most effectively connect the subject with the spectator throughout the painting or photography process.
