POWER Engineers (POWER) is an employee-owned engineering design and environmental consulting firm headquartered in Hailey, Idaho. The company specializes in the design of power delivery and generation systems.^[2][3][4]

As of 2022, POWER had 45 offices and more than 3,000 employees across North America.^[1]

Origin and expansion[edit]

POWER Engineers was established in 1976 in Pocatello as a two-engineer firm. In the following year, the company relocated its headquarters to Hailey, Idaho.^[2]

In 2000, POWER acquired T&D Engineering and Construction (TDEC), a division of Enron Engineering and Construction Co., expanding it’s offices to Portland, Oregon.^[5]

In 2007, the company acquired SPS (System Protection Services).^[6]

In June 2014, POWER Engineers entered into an agreement with Burns and Roe Enterprises to merge BRE engineering services business activities into POWER Engineers. The company acquired all of the capital stock of BRE to complete the merger.^[7][8]

In May 2017, the company acquired Sega Inc., a power plant and electrical distribution engineering services firm.^[9]

In 2018, POWER Engineers acquired Zephyr Environmental Corp., an environmental services company based in Austin, Texas.^[10] During the same year, the company acquired MITKOR Consulting, Ltd., a Canadian firm headquartered in Alberta.^[11]

In April 2021, POWER Engineers acquired Salient Power Engineering LLC, a Colorado-based firm.^[12]

In June 2021, Jim Haynes assumed the role of President and CEO of the company, succeeding Brett Moffet, who had served as CEO from 2016 to 2021.^[13]

Notable work[edit]

One collaboration included the company partnering with the US government for the Power Africa project. This initiative aimed to support the development of power infrastructure in Africa.^[14] In July 2020, POWER Engineers secured an architect engineering contract from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific (NAVPAC), valued at $60 million. The contract, which falls under the indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity category, involves the execution of projects at multiple military and government facilities located in Guam, the Northern Marianas Islands, Australia, and Hawaii.^[15]

In 2021, POWER Engineers provided Engineering, Design and SCADA integration services to Pattern Energy Group for the Western Spirit Wind project. Four wind farms were developed simultaneously and span nearly 120,000 acres in New Mexico, considered the "largest single-phase construction of renewable power in American history."^[16] That same year, POWER Engineers Inc. collaborated with the Idaho National Laboratory to bolster cybersecurity measures for the electrical power grid. The collaborative project focused on two specific technologies: the Master Fault Detector (MFD) and Protective Relay Permissive Communications (PRPC). These technologies aimed to mitigate the risk of cyberattacks targeting the power grid.^{[17] [18]} In 2023, the two firms partnered once again for the Transmission Optimization with Grid Enhancing Technologies (TOGETs) project. The endeavor is funded by the US Department of Energy, through the Office of Electricity(OE) and Wind Energy Technologies Office(WETO.)^[19]

In 2022, POWER Engineers joined forces with Oracle Energy and Water to enhance the implementation and integration of grid modernization. This collaboration sought to advance in grid modernization efforts.^[1]

Recognition[edit]

One project undertaken by POWER Engineers was the design of the Pomona Energy Facility for AltaGas. As a result of their work, the Pomona Energy Facility was honored with a National Recognition Award in the 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The project's design phase took place between August and November 2016, while construction occurred from September to December 2017.^[20]

In industry rankings, POWER Engineers was ranked among Engineering News-Record's top 500 Design Firms in 2019, 4th in the Power sector and 20th in pure design.^[21] The company has consistently appeared in the Top 100 design firms since 2005.^[22] In 2019, POWER was awarded the Kizidere Award for geothermal plant design.^[23]

Advocacy[edit]

POWER Engineers has engaged in community initiatives, including a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation to support reforestation efforts. This collaboration began in 2022 when the company contributed to the planting of 5,000 trees in the Nez Perce National Forest located in Idaho. In 2023, POWER Engineers further expressed their commitment by pledging to plant a minimum of 5,000 trees annually for the next ten years.^[24]

In January 2023, POWER CEO Jim Haynes was among the signatories of the CEO Action Pledge for Diversity & Inclusion.^[25]
