Ray R. Dunakin III is an American illustrator, graphic designer, video game designer, and model railroading hobbyist.[1]. He is best known as the designer of the Ray's Maze series of adventure games for the Macintosh built with the World Builder game creation system. Despite having no formal training, his World Builder games were widely considered to be the best [2].
All of Dunakin's published games were created with the World Builder game creation system and were released as shareware. While many text adventures of the time required guessing specific combinations of verbs and nouns to make progress, Dunakin made a point of programming in as many possible ways of phrasing things as he could think of to reduce frustration. Due to his background as a graphic designer, he also spent a great deal of time crafting stunning and detailed scenes for his games[2]. In exchange for registration, players would receive documents with tips and maps.
In Dunakin's first game, the player takes control of "Fearless" Frank Farley exploring an interdimensional maze through teleportation devices known as "jump doors." Ray's Maze opening screen
This is the first sequel to Ray's Maze. The player again takes on the role of Frank exploring another interdimensional maze and solving puzzles.
The third and final game in the Ray's Maze series. It is the largest of the three and allows the player play as the female character "Daredevil" Dawn. An updated version was also released for Mac OS X in 2015[3]
In Twisted! the player takes on the role of a storm chaser who is transported to a strange world and must solve puzzles to find their way home.
