    Rhondda Outlaws

    Rhondda Outlaws are an amateur rugby league club based in Rhondda. They have men's, women's, under 12's and under 14's sides. They play in the Welsh domestic leagues and will represent Wales in the 2021 Euro XIII.[1]

    History[edit]

    The Rhondda Outlaws were officially formed on 30 March 2015 with the establishment of a formal constitution. Initially the club consisted of just an Under 16s team who played their first match on 7 June 2015 against Aber Valley Wolves (winning 40-28). In their first season, the under 16's made it to the Grand Final of the Under 16s league before losing to Pill Harriers (38-22).

    The following year the age-grades were restructured and two teams were fielded; Under 17s and Under 15s. At the end of the 2016 season, the Under 17s and Under 15s were disbanded.

    2017 saw a revival of the club with the introduction of an open-age men's team and a move from their old home of Treherbert to Sardis Road (home of Pontypridd RFC).[2]

    In 2019 the club expanded again with the introduction of an Under 12s side.[3] and a Women's side[4]

    In November 2019, the club moved from Sardis Road to a new home at Glyncoch Sports & Services Institute.[5] The moved made them the first community club in Wales to have their own venue.[5]

    In 2020 the men's team entered the Challenge Cup for the first time[6] and the club was expanded again with the introduction of an Under 14s side.[7]

    Open-age men's team[edit]

    2017[edit]

    The men's team was formed in 2017 and played their first ever game at home against Valley Cougars (on Saturday 20th May 2017), losing 80-10.[8][9] They lost seven and won just one of their next fixtures that season; A 34-6 victory over Cardiff Blue Dragons in Cardiff.[10]

    2018[edit]

    This season saw the Outlaws improve with a total of 3 wins, 1 draw and 6 loses for the season.[10]

    2019[edit]

    The Outlaws won all but one game in the 2019 season (7 wins, 1 loss).[10] They beat Bridgend Blue Bulls 34-22 in the 17th Welsh Grand Final to be crowned the Welsh Champions.[11]

    2020[edit]

    The Rhondda Outlaws entered the Challenge Cup for the first time in 2020 after being drawn away against Barrow Island in the 1st round.[12][13] They lost the match 84-6.[6][14][15]

    Open-age women's team[edit]

    2019[edit]

    In 2019 the Outlaws established a women's open age-team and played the first ever game of Women's Rugby League in Wales[16]. The game was against Cardiff Blue Dragons at the Memorial Ground, Cardiff on Saturday 27th July. The Outlaws lost 52-10.[17]

    A return fixture was played on Sunday 4th August at Sardis Road, Pontypridd. The Outlaws narrowly lost 28-30 against the Cardiff Blue Dragons.[9]

    Under 12s[edit]

    The first Outlaws Under 12s match was against Cardiff Blue Dragons at Sardis Road, Pontypridd. The Outlaws won that game 50-6.[9] They went on to end the season with 5 wins, 1 draw and 8 loses.[18]
