Robert Long (born May 20th 1957) is an American ceramic artist and arts professor at Mississippi State University (1990-present). He is known primarily for his wood and salt fired stoneware interpretations of functional forms.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Robert was born in Bedford, Massachusetts in 1957 to an Air Force family. His family relocated to Japan before settling in Fair Oaks, California when he was six years old.

Robert received his B.A from California State University, Sacramento in 1982 where studied under California Funk artist Peter VandenBerge.[2]

Robert received his M.F.A. from Clemson University in 1990.

Career[edit]

After grad school, in 1990, Robert accepted a faculty position in the art department at Mississippi State University.[3]

Robert has received numerous awards for his work including a silver award at the Red Clay Survey in 1996, and Best in Show at the Cotton District Arts Festival in 2011.

Robert's article "A Journey with Fire" featured in Ceramics Monthly in December 2000.[4] The article was included in "Wood Firings: Journeys and Techniques" published by the American Ceramic Society in August, 2001.[5]
