Robert Ross established what is now known as the University of Dominica School of Medicine in 1978. It was initially named The University of Dominica School of Medicine and served as a provider of medical education with programmes leading to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. At the time, there was a shortage of both medical schools and physicians in the United States. The majority of the university's students come from North America, namely the United States and Canada. Officially rebranding itself as Ross Institution School of Medicine in 1984, the university had previously been known as Ross College.
The founding class of Ross University School of Medicine consisted of a total of twelve students. The year 2013 saw the graduation of the 10,000th student from Ross, who got their medical degree from the institution.
The pre-clinical campus of the Ross University School of Medicine may be found in Barbados at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, which is situated on Two Mile Hill. This building serves as both a campus for the educational institution and a convention centre for the local government. In addition to a clinical simulation facility, the site has a medical and anatomical imaging laboratory.
