Muthana Sartawi was born on 12th November 1981. Sartawi graduated the class of 2006 from the Arabian Gulf University College of Medicine where he earned his medical degree (M.D). After getting a scholarship in 2007, he joined a Neurosurgery Residency at the University of Alberta, Canada. He later pursued Orthopaedics at the University of Dalhousie, Canada. He completed the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada board requirements in orthopaedic surgery in 2013. He then completed a fellowship in total joint replacement surgery at Rush University Medical Centre in 2014 and was certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2016.[9]
Sartawi worked as a surgeon at Presence Hospital in Urbana, Illinois from 2014 to 2017. He was the chairman of the Christie Clinic orthopaedic department in Champaign, Illinois from 2014 to 2018. He was appointed director of OSF Joint Care Centre of Excellence in Urbana, Illinois from 2015 to 2018. He was also appointed as an assistant professor at the department of surgery at the University of Illinois. Sartawi pioneered same-day joint replacement surgery in Southern Illinois and was the first to perform outpatient knee replacements in the Middle East with a 97% success rate. [10] Currently he is an orthopaedic surgeon practicing at Sarah Bush Lincoln Centre, Illinois.[11] He is also director of the Rapid Recovery Joint Replacement Center at King’s College Hospital London – Dubai.[12]
Sartawi is known for developing, inventing and patenting a knee replacement approach named the Modified Intervastus Approach to the Knee.[2][3][4][6] This approach has been published in journals such as the American Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is an innovation to its field since traditional forms of knee replacement surgeries involve the cutting of Ligament and Muscle, while the Modified Intervastus Approach to the Knee preserves the muscles and Tendon surrounding the knee thus contributes to a rapid recovery with minimal pain.[13][14]
Muthana Sartawi's invention was immediately recognized by his peers and the media.[12][15][16] Sartawi also has received several honors and prizes in Kuwait. The Governor of Farwaniya Governorate, Sheikh Faisal Al-Hamoud honored him for his medical achievement of installing artificial knee and joints without curring ligaments and muscles.[4] Sartawi was also honored by the Kuwaiti Youth Public Authority for his achievement in the field of orthopaedics and surgery. Najat Al-Sayegh, the public relations official of the Kuwaiti Youth Public Authority said in a statement to "KUNA", on the margin of honor, of pride and pride in what Al-Sartawi (34 years old) has achieved in terms of Kuwaiti international achievement in the field of orthopedics and surgery.
The former Amir of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah praised him for his contribution to the medical field, saying that "he is “a source of pride for Kuwait.”[17][18]
The projection earned by Sartawi earned him a position in the Dubai Future Council for Health and Wellbeing, one of the 13 Dubai Future Councils, where he became a committee member "to achieve the strategic goals and the ambitious vision of the UAE to attain the aspirations of future generations and reach a sustainable future in smart healthcare."[7][8]
