Stony Brook University

State University of New York at Stony Brook (SBU), is a public research university in Stony Brook, Long Island, in the greater New York City metropolitan region. It shares a campus with the University of Buffalo as one of the two flagship universities of the State University of New York system.

Located in Suffolk County, it is the state's biggest public institution (in terms of land size), with 213 buildings spread over 1,454 acres (5.9 km2) of property.

The State University College of Long Island was founded in Oyster Bay, New York, in 1957 and relocated to Stony Brook, New York, in 1962. As a member of the Association of American Institutions, which is a select group of premier research universities in North America, Stony Brook was elected to that organisation in 2001. University Research Association, which is a broader organisation, includes the institution as well. In the category "R1: Doctoral Universities – Extremely active research activity," it is included.

Brookhaven National Laboratory, a national laboratory of the United States Department of Energy, is managed by Stony Brook University, in collaboration with Battelle. It purchased property for a Research and Development Park close to its main campus in 2004 and operates four company incubators in the surrounding area. Increased production of US$7.23 billion due to the University's influence on the Long Island economy, and research expenditures have crossed the US$230 million threshold on an annual basis. With 26,814 students enrolled, Stony Brook University is the biggest single-site employer on Long Island, employing over 15,000 people, including over 2,700 academic members.

It is tied for the seventh-highest number of Fields Medalists among American colleges, thanks to its affiliation with five Fields Medalists. Stony Brook academics have earned a total of seven Nobel Prizes, with two of them receiving the Abel Prize in mathematics.

The Seawolves have represented Stony Brook University in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association since 1999. Since 2001, Stony Brook has competed as a member of the America East Conference, which will be replaced by the Colonial Athletic Association on July 1, 2022.
