An individual who is enrolled in school or another educational institution and who is actively studying with the aim of collecting information, developing professions, and obtaining work in a preferred area is referred to as a student in the most general sense. In a larger sense, a student is anybody who devotes significant time and effort to the deep intellectual engagement with a subject matter that is required to master it as part of some practical endeavour in which such mastery is essential or crucial.
In the United Kingdom and most Commonwealth nations, the term "student" refers to those who are enrolled in secondary schools and higher education (e.g., college or university); those who are enrolled in primary and elementary schools are referred to as "pupils." Pupils are also referred to as "children."
