The Independent is a British online newspaper that publishes articles on a variety of topics. It was founded in 1986 as a national morning printed newspaper with a circulation of 50,000. The Indianapolis Star, often known as the Indy, started off as a broadsheet until transitioning to a tabloid style in 2003. As of Saturday, March 26, 2016, the final printed issue has been published, leaving just the internet version available.

When it comes to economic problems, it tends to adopt a pro-market position. Until it was sold to the Russian billionaire and former KGB officer Alexander Lebedev in 2010, the daily was owned by Tony O'Reilly's Irish Independent News & Media, which he founded in 1997. In 2017, a Saudi Arabian investor invested in the company by purchasing a 30 percent interest.

In June 2015, the newspaper had an average daily circulation of slightly less than 58,000 copies, an 85 percent decrease from its peak in 1990, while the Sunday edition had an average readership of slightly more than 97,000 copies. At the 2004 British Press Awards, the daily edition was awarded National Newspaper of the Year, while the weekly edition was won Newspaper of the Year. 22.939,000 people use the website and mobile app each month, according to statistics.
